Can Approaching Thunderstorm Cause Headache?

Some people feel that change in air pressure causes them nasty physical symptoms. During low air pressure you feel tired and headache appears before thunder. What phenomenon is in question? Can changes in air pressure really cause headache, line director of the neurology clinic HUS Nina Forss?

-These kinds of symptoms are common from the office. Especially a part of patients suffering from migraine tells that migraine headache triggers during thunder or low air pressure.

-There has been some research on the topic, but the results vary. In some of the researches it has been noticed that migraine patients’ headache attacks increase along thunderstorm. This kind of link has not however been able to be statistically proven in all researches.

What other explanations could there be for thunderstorm headache, if it’s not air pressure’s misdeeds?

-There are other factors related to environment and weather, such as strong wind and high temperature, that are often related to low air pressure. Also they can cause symptoms such as those described.

How big is the portion of people that get thunderstorm headache? Is there any means to alleviate it?

-Symptoms appear moderately particularly to people sensitive to headaches. An ordinary painkiller and attack drugs habitually used by migraine patients may help to control them.
